International Student Advisor Job Description Sample 1:
Job Setting: College/University – Admissions Department
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise international students on sensitive and confidential issues related to immigration, financial, academic, social, health insurance/MSI, legal and personal matters.
- Advocate on-campus for issues relating to international students and general university initiatives relating to internationalization strategies.
- Liaise with various governmental agencies regarding immigration, legal and security issues concerning international students.
- Work in collaboration with Off Campus Housing, Residence Life, Housing, external community organizations and student societies.
- Develop, implement and assess strategic goals and objectives for international degree-seeking and exchange students living on/off campus on a yearly basis.
- Plan and deliver programs for international students; assist with program needs assessment and evaluation.
- Participate as committee member responsible for reviewing and approving applications for the International Centre financial assistance programs.
- Represent the international student program on various internal and external committees when required.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree (Master’s degree beneficial).
- Five to seven years of previous experience advising students in a post-secondary environment. Experience in cross-cultural advising and/or student service program development and implementation is required.
- Experience in the design, delivery, and evaluation of student programs is considered a strong asset.
- Demonstrated strong project management, organizational, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
- Knowledge of various educational systems, domestic and international, student assistance programs and immigration regulations is considered an asset. — Competency in a foreign language is highly preferred. Preference will be given to candidates fluent in Arabic and/or Cantonese and/or Mandarin.
